Alagna is a small village set in a dramatically steep valley in the Northern Italian Alps, close to the Swiss border. The Monterosa region boasts the largest off-piste ski area in Europe with 180km of stunning pistes. Around two hours from Milan, Turin and Bergamo airports, it's ideally placed for travellers.
The area has a rich cultural history which provides the background to a unique, unspoilt and rustic community. This is manifested in the welcoming warmth of the local Walser people: welcoming to visitors but keen to preserve their way of life.
Over many centuries Alagna has developed a very special rural cuisine, amply augmented by some of the world's finest wines. On the après-ski front, Alagna offers a truer, more natural feel. In its bucolic bars, you'll meet the owners and become a member of the community, not just another paying customer.
New lifts have sprung up connecting Alagna to Gressoney and Champoluc in Italy's pursuit of its very own Trois Vallées. This has transformed Alagna from solely an off-piste resort to quite a different entity: Alagna retains its challenging nature but now allows access for skiers of all abilities.
